Anáhuac Cancun University awarded, through the International School of Medicine, the Anáhuac Medal in Medicine 2022 to Dr. Guillermo Torre Amione, president of TecSalud and Specialist in Cardiology with a subspecialty in Electrophysiology and Interventionist.

Jesús Quirce Andrés L.C., president of Anáhuac Cancun University (UAC); the honoree, Dr.Guillermo Torre Amione, winner of the Anáhuac Medal in Medicine 2022; the student Alejandra Couto, president of the Alumni Society of the International School of Medicine; Tomasz Bogdanski, vice president for Academics; Dr. José Antonio Ruy-Díaz Reynoso, Dean of the International School of Medicine; and Dr. José Sotero Juambelz, Director of the Health Sciences Division, led the event.

To begin the protocol event, Laura Alejandra Couto Suárez gave a message of gratitude, not only for his presence but as a doctor who inspires young people, who, during his career, has done more than his share, an example of being someone who goes out of his comfort zone to do something for others.

Afterward, Dr. José Sotero Juambelz shared a little of Dr. Torre's trajectory, among which he highlighted: he is a Surgeon with a Ph.D. from the University of Chicago specializing in Immunology. In the clinical field, he completed his residency in Internal Medicine and his specialty in Cardiology at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston. He is certified as a specialist in Clinical Cardiology by the Mexican Board of Cardiology and by the Councils of Internal Medicine, Cardiology, and Heart Transplantation of the American Board of Internal Medicine.

Until 2010, he was Director of the Heart Failure and Heart Transplant Service at Methodist Hospital in Houston. He was a Board Member of the DeBakey Heart Center at Methodist Hospital in Houston from 1999 to 2006 and has been a Professor of Medicine in the Department of Cardiology at Baylor College of Medicine and Weil Cornell Medical School, as well as the founder of the Transplant Laboratory at Methodist Hospital in Houston.

After 26 years in the United States, he returned to Mexico as president of TecSalud and professor of the Research Group with a Strategic Focus on Cardiovascular Medicine, where the premise is research in favor of humanity.

In his speech, Dr. Jose Antonio Ruy exclaimed in his message on the occasion of this award: "Thanks to his work, Mexican cardiology has shone in the world. Therefore, I make the semblance of the merits of Dr. Torre because he deserves the award, without a doubt, not only for his quality as a doctor, teacher, or scientist of international stature but for his personal excellence and human quality.

Our highest authority, F. Jesus Quirce Andres L.C., also dedicated a long message to those who witnessed this medal presentation:

"We are honored to give this distinction and that you, Dr. Guillermo Torre, accept it with so much pleasure. This is a recognition of your trajectory".

The President of the Anáhuac Cancun University indicated that the International School of Medicine, which today houses students from 18 countries of the world, and has an international enrollment of 700 students, prioritizes the meeting of characters that embody the authentic leadership of positive action with the young people of this house of studies, to continue contributing with examples to the construction of upright people, positive action leaders in medicine.

After receiving the Anáhuac Medal in Medicine 2022 from the hands of the President, Dr. Guillermo Torre Amione spoke about his long career abroad, how he opted for cardiology rather than oncology, which was his first choice, and talked about God's signs, as he calls the events that forged his life path, in addition to sharing his human side talking about his family.

The most critical moment of his talk came when he spoke about his work during the most crucial stage of the Covid-19 pandemic. At this stage, he worked hard to counteract misinformation in social networks and, at the same time, generate a health program in Monterrey, Mexico, where everyone had access to decent health care. The students not only heard from him the details of his vast trajectory but also learned that Dr. Torre's success is not based on the more than 200 medical articles he has written nor on the number of positions he has held as director of the most prestigious medical schools in the world, but on his realization as a human being, who returned to his country after 26 years, even though he had all the comforts of life in the United States, he decided to return only with the desire to improve the Mexican health system.

The Anáhuac Medal in Medicine 2022 is given to someone who embodies the leadership of Positive Action and has all the virtues that align with the education of the Anáhuac Cancun University.
