Anáhuac Cancún hosted the Cátedra Prima Behind the Scenes with Christopher Houston, JOYÁ Vidanta’s Company Manager.

This past january, the International school of communication and entertainment of the Anáhuac Cancún University, held the Cátedra Prima Behind the scenes: Insight into managing a live production show facilitated by Christopher Houston, current Company Manager at JOYÁ Vidanta and former artistic director and choreographer with extensive experience in Cirque du Soleil tours (Amaluna, OVO, Kooza) and iconic productions like Miss Saigon, CATS, and Celine Dion’s A New Day.
In this insightful lecture, were present Prof. Humberto Tungüí, director of the International School of Communication and Entertainment; Adriana Echegollén, coordinator of the Entertainment Business Management degree program; Diego Gálvez, coordinator of the Sound Engineering degree program, Gabriela Maruri, coordinator of the Communication program; and Zofia Hausleber, coordinator of the Entertainment Business Management program in spanish.
Christopher, a seasoned industry professional, shared his experiences and expertise from his role as the company manager at JOYÁ. He emphasized the importance of artistic operations, which play a crucial role in achieving the organization's artistic goals. He explained how having a talented, yet most importantly, a trustworthy team of stage managers, captains, coaches, dancers, singers, and acrobats is essential for a successful production in every aspect.
He also emphasized the importance of technical operations in ensuring the success of any production, stressing that safety must be the top priority. Christopher went on to discuss the vital role of Front of House operations, covering everything from building maintenance to food and beverage services, boutique/photography products, and box office management, all of which play a crucial role in enhancing the guest experience.
Following his presentation, Christopher engaged with students, answering their questions and sharing stories of his early career as a performer and later as a producer and manager. He encouraged the students to never give up when faced with challenges, drawing from his own experiences of overcoming numerous closed doors before seizing his big opportunities in the industry. He stressed that resilience and the ability to persist in the face of adversity are key qualities that define great leaders and producers.
To conclude the event, Prof. Humberto Tungüí, Director of the International School of Communication and Entertainment, thanked Christopher for his invaluable lecture. Following the conference, students had the chance to enjoy lunch with Christopher, connect with him, and learn more about his career journey.
